Horticulture as a sub-sector of agriculture, contributes 18% of the gross produce of agriculture sector and 52% of export earnings. India ranks second in horticulture production in the world. Its varied agroclimatic conditions help to produce variety of horticulture crops throughout the year. Increased thrust on this sector is reinforced by the establishment of National Horticulture Mission by Government of India.

Expertise Available

The expertise available with Nabcons, under P & H is quite vast, covering large number of crops/ activities.

  1. Pomology: Dealing with fruit crops such as mango, citrus, banana, guava, litchi, papaya, pineapple, pomegranate, ber, chiku, grape, jackfruit, apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, cherry, almond, walnut, pecan nut, etc.

  2. Floriculture: This sub-sector covers the flower crops and other ornamental plants e.g. rose, jasmine, gladiolus, lilium, orchids, anthurium, chrysanthemum, pansy, marigold, bougainvillea, carnation, gerbera, calendula, cosmos, dahlia, hibiscus, palms, crotons, cactus, etc.

  3. Olericulture: Covers the vegetable crops such as potato, pea, tomato, brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, knolkhol, carrot, radish, turnip, beet, cucumber, squash, pumpkin, kundru, gourds, etc.

  4. Plantation crops: Deals with such crops where usually largescale areas are required for commercial activity and the produce may be other than fruits, which usually needs processing before it can be used e.g., tea, coffee, rubber, betel vine, oil palm, cashew, coconut, areca nut, date palm, etc.

  5. Spices: Crops that are mainly used as spice, such as clove, cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc.

  6. Medicinal plants: This sector deals with plants yielding alkaloids and other medicinal constituents such as belladonna, rauvolfia, dioscorea, cinchona, ashawagandha, Aloe, safed musli etc.

  7. Essential Oil and aromatic plants: Covers plants, yielding oils for perfumery, confectionary, medicinal and other uses. The examples are menthe, rose, tulsi, citronella, lemon grass, jasmine, etc.

  8. Fruits and vegetable preservation: This includes processing of fruits and vegetables by canning, dehydration and other methods of preservation.

  9. Other Crops / Activities: Mushrooms, Bee keeping (Apiculture), Nursery, Tissue culture Sericulture etc.

Nabcons has successfully completed more than 50 plantation and horticulture assignments which include project appraisal for floriculture, greenhouse; export-oriented oyster mushroom units, seed units and techno-economic feasibility studies for maize processing plants, multi-activity agro based farm projects.
